A client persona is a short, specific description of one type of client you want more of: who they are, what they are looking for, and what makes them book. Spas that market to “everyone” tend to attract the people most sensitive to discounts. Spas that market to three or four clear personas attract regulars.
Start with your best regulars, not a template
Open your booking software and look at the clients who visit most often and spend the most. Ignore the one-off bargain hunters. Group the regulars: what do they have in common? Typical patterns in massage and spa businesses:
- The recovering athlete. Books deep tissue or sports massage on a schedule, cares about outcomes and therapist expertise, rebooks readily.
- The stressed professional. Books to decompress, values quiet, late availability and a frictionless booking experience.
- The chronic-pain client. Often referred, cares about direct billing and consistency with one therapist.
- The gift and occasion buyer. Couples massages, spa days, gift cards; buys around holidays and birthdays.
Write each persona in one paragraph
Name, age range, why they book, what they search for, what would make them choose you, and what would make them come back. Keep it grounded in real clients you can picture.
Use the personas everywhere
In your ads
Each persona gets its own ad group and message. The athlete sees expertise and results; the professional sees calm and easy booking. One generic ad for everyone speaks to nobody.
In your offers
A first-visit offer for the professional, a package for the athlete, a gift card push for the occasion buyer before the holidays.
In your follow-up
Rebooking intervals differ: the athlete every two weeks, the professional monthly, the occasion buyer around the next occasion. Retention campaigns that respect that convert far better than one generic reminder.
On your website
A page or section per persona, written in their language, with the proof they care about.
Keep it to three or four
More personas than that and you are back to marketing to everyone. Review them twice a year against your booking data and adjust.
This is the thinking behind every campaign we build for spas and wellness centers. If you would rather we built the personas and the campaigns for you, book a discovery call.
